The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) – the ground breaking tech agency in the United States Department of Defence is responsible for ensuring the US is ahead of the rest of the world when it comes to next-gen tech.
It’s working with Carnegie Mellon University on Reconfigurable Wheel-Track technology that converts wheels from tracks to tires in the middle of a drive.
DARPA researchers have come up with the Reconfigurable Wheel Track (RWT), a technology that’s capable of shifting a wheel’s shape while a vehicle is in motion.
It can transform from a wheel to a track in approximately two seconds, giving vehicles a dash of added mobility in mixed environments.
Normally, you’d have to use or equip either one or the other at a time, but DARPA’s RWT technology lets the military to swap between the two at a moment.
Another impressive tech DARPA showed off at the is The Multi-mode Extreme Travel Suspension (METS) system, METS can adjust the vehicle’s suspension to account for uneven terrain, bumpy terrain.
