On October 2018, the poop emoji celebrated its 10th anniversary. The original type of the poop emoji was initially introduced internationally by Google in 2008 as an emoticon for Gmail and afterward declared as part of Unicode 6.0 at 2010.
Emojipedia describes it as “a pile of poo that is shaped like a soft-serve ice cream; brown in color with a friendly smile in most versions of this emoji.”
It has been 10 years since the poop emoji was made, giving smartphone users everywhere the opportunity to express a million different indecent ways by one grinning swirl of excrement. All whilst coming across adorable.
A milestone such as this calls for celebration and what better way to memorialize what became a glowing example of twenty-first century communication than with a shitty self advertising campaign.
Described that way by the artist himself, Toronto based photographer Justin Poulsen has recreated the poop emoji in 50 creative manners. Poulsen worked with Canadian creative agency rethink to realize the campaign that sees the dunk matter takes shape in the shape of LEGO, candle wax, mashed potato, and even a disco ball.
The self-promo piece was made to show off Poulsen’s craft, which extends well beyond photography. He prefers to build his own props and in this case created his scenes from camera, as opposed to in photoshop.
This is the second crazy and wacky self promo which poulsen has partnered with rethink to make. Back in 2015 they teamed up to make severed thumb drives– handmade Universal Serial Bus thumb drives shaped like Poulsen’s thumb which were then sent to potential customers.
